Tokihiro Satō

Tokihiro Sato is a Japanese photographer born in 1957, known for his unusual expressions of light and space and interpretations of performance and dance. His dreamy light-speckled photographs are created in a singular way – with his camera playing an equally important role as the light pens and mirrors Tokihiro Sato uses.

Much of Sato’s work uses long exposures from one to three hours, while he moves around the space creating illuminated lines drawn with flashlights.

The video below shows Sato’s technique very well. Although he uses Large format cameras in large spaces, there is no reason that this type of photography can’t be replicated with digital cameras.
