Telephoto lenses allow subjects at a distance to be brought closer. They are good for portraits, as they give a flattering appearance. Telephoto lenses cause compression which makes the background appear closer to the foreground and gives a stacked appearance. This effect is exploited by press photographers to make crowds seem bigger and more densely packed.
