Ansel Adams

One of the pioneers of photography, renowned for his incredible Black and White landscapes. His technical knowledge was as significant as his creative ability and everything in modern photography has been influenced in some way by Ansel Adams.

Adams was responsible for the Zone System and introducing the introduction of photography into Art Schools and Art galleries. He was instrumental in photography being recognised as a legitimate art form His images are the benchmark for landscape and black and white photography. Work such as ‘Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico are an example of Adams technical and creative prowess. The legend goes that he could not find his light meter, but ‘knew the luminance of the moon — 250 c/ft2‘ and used that to calculate the correct exposure. One of his most famous photographs, it has caused controversy recently in 2026, when a gallery owner recreated it in colour using Artificial Intelligence, bringing to the forefront discussions about photography ownership and ethics.
